Our Mission
At Foothill SELPA, we believe every student can learn and deserves a learning environment that is accessible, equitable, and inclusive. Our mission is to leverage collective resources to ensure the success of all students, making our schools a central and beneficial part of our communities.
Our Vision
We envision a community where every student, regardless of their background or abilities, has the opportunity to succeed in a supportive and inclusive environment. By working together, we create schools that are not only centers of learning but also hubs of connection, fun, safety, and growth for everyone.
What is a SELPA?
In 1977, all school districts and county school offices were mandated to form consortiums in geographical regions of sufficient size and scope to provide for all special education service needs of children residing within the region boundaries. Each region, Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), developed a local plan describing how it would provide special education services. Each
SELPAs size and scope varies in order to best serve the district or districts within their geographical region. Despite their variance, each SELPA aims to serve the same vital functions.
Key functions of each SELPA include:
1. Coordination of Services: SELPAs coordinate the delivery of special education services among member districts to ensure consistency and quality.
2. Professional Development: They provide training and professional development for special education teachers and staff.
3. Compliance and Oversight: SELPAs ensure that districts comply with state and federal special education laws and regulations.
4. Resource Allocation: They manage the distribution of special education funding and resources to member districts.
5. Parent and Community Engagement: SELPAs offer support and resources to parents and engage with the community to promote understanding and support for special education.
By pooling resources and expertise, SELPAs help school districts effectively meet the needs of students with disabilities, ensuring they have access to the education and services they need to succeed.
Today, SELPAs are integral to California's educational landscape, ensuring that all students with disabilities receive the education and support they need to thrive. Their commitment to collaboration, equity, and excellence continues to drive the advancement of special education across the state.
